Posted by admin January - 25 - 2012 - Wednesday Comments Off

Dear families and friends,

Attached you will find the session dates and fees for 2012, Chikopi’s 93rd summer.

As we run, sail and swim towards the 100th summer, it is you, our families whom we would like to thank for your continued encouragement through the years and generations.  Your support of Chikopi, via word of mouth and showing family and friends your photo collections, has been our biggest form of advertisement.  It is you we have to thank for enabling Chikopi to continue the traditions passed down from Matt Mann II.

Thank you, again, for entrusting your most precious possession, your son, to us each summer.

There are no fee increases at Chikopi for 2012.  The Early Registration Discount will be repeated.  Register and pay the full invoice by January 31st 2012 and we will reduce the tuition fee by 10%.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Our best to you all,

 Bob

Pro Boim

Posted by admin January - 23 - 2012 - Monday Comments Off

On November 7th 2011, Chikopi’s very own Pro Boim was inducted into the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Irving “Pro” Boim got the nickname “Pro” at five-years old, because he did spot-on imitations of pro baseball greats; the nickname stuck for life. He was a high school phenom who, upon recommendation, attended U of M., ultimately pitching on the University of Michigan baseball team that won the 1942 Big Ten Baseball Championship. He was known for having a great curve and live fastball. In 1942, he had a 1.40 ERA when he enlisted in the Navy. Pro’s greatest baseball moment may have been in 1944 during WWII when he pitched for Pensacola Naval Air Station against Bronson Marine Air Base. Ted Williams was on the Bronson team, and Pro faced him 4 times, striking him out twice in a row. In 1946, after college, Pro enjoyed a 9-year career in the Minor Leagues with Pittsburgh, the Chicago White Sox, and Cincinnati where he played with or against 56 Big Leaguers. He was the winning pitcher in a Minor League All-Star game in 1948. He also played some for the House of David traveling baseball team. Had he not spent 3 years in the war in his prime, he probably would have been in the Majors. Pro’s greatest achievement was inspiring thousands of kids whom he taught at Camp Chikopi in Ontario, in baseball camps and as an elementary P.E. teacher for 44 years.

Bob Anderson – Darth Vader

Posted by admin January - 3 - 2012 - Tuesday Comments Off

Olympic fencer, movie sword master and Chikopi alum, Bob Anderson passed away January 1st aged 89.  Bob was invited to teach fencing at Chikopi by our then resident fencing coach Bob Foxcroft, (Foxy).  Anderson worked with actors including Errol Flynn and Antonio Banderas during five decades as a sword master, fight director and stunt performer.  Bob donned the Darth Vader black helmet in two of the three original “Star Wars” movies.  It was always supposed to be a secret, until Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker told Starlog Magazine.  Darth Vader was voiced by James Earl Jones and played by former weightlifter David Prowse but, Bob Anderson stepped in to perform the key fight scenes.  Those of us at Chikopi in the 1980’s will always remember Bob Anderson re-enacting Darth Vader’s light saber fight and rescuing Princess Leia.  The scene was recreated in the MainHouse by pushing the tables to the sides opening a long floor section.  He and Foxy performed the duel and Ak-O-Mak attended the show, too.  Bob was one of the film industry’s most sought-after stunt performers, fight choreographers and sword masters working on movies that included, “The Empire Strikes Back”, “Return of the Jedi”, “From Russia With Love”, “Die Another Day”, “The Princess Bride”, “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro” and, “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy”.  Bob contributed to the 2009 documentary “Reclaiming the Blade”.
