Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why should we choose Camp Chikopi?
A. Chikopi has been around since 1920, we are an established organization and we have accreditation through the OCA, Ontario Camping Association, the respected governing body of summer camps here in Ontario, Canada, since its inception in 1962. Since 1920, Chikopi has provided a safe, fun filled learning environment that offers boys an opportunity to thrive and rom lifelong friendships, all while fulfilling a keen sense of adventure. We have an enthusiastic, international base of alumni who continue to stay involved with Chikopi.
Q. What is Chikopi’s philosophy?
A. Our philosophy is based on Bob’s philosophy: “fun through sports and camping, strive to be the best that you can be, take pride in what you do and always be positive.” Bob believes that a good athlete must also be a good citizen. Fair play, respect for others and their property, and good sportsmanship are of prime importance to him and Chikopi.
Q. Who is taking care of my son?
A. Our staff is hand-picked by us; almost every staff member was once a camper here at Chikopi. Every staff member goes through a rigorous interview process, we screen references, and request complete back ground checks. We pick staff who are fun loving people, and at the same time they have a great deal of compassion for all those little things that can trouble a camper. At those times our staff can be relied upon to be there with an open ear and a friendly word.
Q. What does my son need to bring to Chikopi?
A. Campers need to be equipped for the natural wilderness of Chikopi, as well as the weather conditions they might encounter. Our clothing list is based on many years of experience. Please note that every piece of clothing your son brings to Chikopi needs to be clearly labeled with his first and last name.
Q. Do you have flushing toilets and electricity at Chikopi?
A. Chikopi has both flushing toilets and showers. Camper cabins do not have electricity, but our dining hall, kitchen and office do.
Q. Can I visit my son at Chikopi?
A. We have several days each session when you can visit your son. These days have been chosen to correspond with our travel days and canoe trips. For more information on our visiting days, please see our visitor information form. Please contact our office a few days ahead of your visit to confirm we will be on camp and not off somewhere doing an activity.
Q. How do I register my son for Chikopi?
A. Chikopi is a small, family owned and operated camp, but we will always do our best to get your son in a bunk. To register you may download and print our registration form from the website, return it by fax, email or post. Easy!
Q. How old are your campers?
A. Campers are aged 7-17 years old.
Q. Where are the campers from?
A. Most of our campers are Canadian, but many countries are represented each summer. In 2012 there were 25 countries flying their flag at our entrance and in the dining hall.
Q. What is the camper to staff ratio?
A. We are very proud of our ratio; we have maintained a 3:1 ratio even when many other camps have reduced this ratio to save expenses. Our staff participate in a week long Pre-camp orientation training session. These include reviewing their First Aid, CPR and Life Guard procedures.
Q. Do you provide transport?
A. Our chartered bus or camp van travel from Toronto Pearson International airport. Our staff will escort your camper to check in and their gate at the end of the camp session.
Q. Is Chikopi nut free?
A. Yes. Both our kitchen crew and food suppliers know Chikopi is a total nut free camp. We also discourage parents from sending care packages that contain food, if one does arrive the food is removed to ensure the safety of every camper and staff member at Chikopi.
Q. How can I pay?
A. Our preferred method of payment is credit card, VISA and MasterCard only. We also accept Canadian and US personal cheques, money orders, and bank drafts.
Q. Do you go on Canoe Trips?
A. Yes, our 2013 canoe trip dates are August 6th – 10th. We will also participate in an “overnight” trip during the August 17-31st session.
